Now that we are in the heart of the 2018 hurricane season, it is a great time to be aware of some precautionary measures that can protect your home. Although we live in Central Florida communities that are approximately 50 miles inland from both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, we can still experience the damaging effects of hurricanes and tropical storms.
All of your home’s windows should be covered. Permanent storm shutters are the best option. However, a second option is to cut 5/8” exterior grade or marine plywood to fit each window and have it ready to install. Simply taping the glass doesn’t prevent windows from breaking.
Reduce roof damage by securely installing straps or additional clips that fasten your roof to the frame of your home.
Trim trees and shrubs to make them more wind resistant. Be sure to do this in advance to allow time for the debris to be picked up on your regularly scheduled yard waste collection day.
Clear debris from all rain gutters and downspouts.
Reinforce your garage door(s) by installing horizontal bracing, purchased from the garage door manufacturer, on each panel of the door. If needed, you may also change the hinges, the center supports, and end supports to something a little more heavy duty.
Develop a plan to bring indoors any loose items such as outdoor furniture, decorations, trash cans, etc.
